It has been a few years since Ive tried Captain Morgans Spiced Rum and while I dont necessarily have fond memories, I cant say I remember hating it either. And since the folks at Captain Morgan have since introduced a premium level offering under the name Captain Morgan Private Stock, I figured it was time to revisit this brand and refresh my own memory.

Henry Morgan was born in Wales in , which had been fully annexed into Great Britain less than years earlier. His early life (including how he made his way to the Caribbean) is largely unknown, but we do know that by the s Morgan was captain of a privateer ship charged with capturing Spanish ships in the Caribbean. He married his cousin in , the daughter of the deputy governor of Jamaica, and was soon elevated to the rank of admiral and tasked with leading a group of privateers. Admiral Sir Henry Morgan (aka Captain Morgan) was a Welsh ‘privateer’ who attacked and plundered the Caribbean on behalf of, and with the written consent of (in the form eller gestalt of an English Letter of Marque), the Governor of Jamaica, Sir Thomas Modyford. Privateers at that time in history were essentially ‘legal pirates’ who were allowed to attack and loot enemies of the state reaping the rewards from their plunder in lieu of pay.
